A recent Brown Bag opportunity at Berry Hill Elementary School is incorporating technology to teach students about the American flag and closely analyze something recited every day: The Pledge of Allegiance. Did you know that Frances Bellamy’s initial Pledge of Allegiance in its entirety read as this?“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” As part of their social studies unit, second-grade students in Eva Kaplan’s class studied the history of the U.S. flag and expressed the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance initially adopted by Congress in 1942 and officially named in 1945. They were so interested in sharing what they learned with other students in the school, that they wrote Principal Mary Kolkhorst a letter requesting that the school develop an activity to engage students to learn more facts about the flag and the pledge. As a result of their efforts, Ms. Kolkhorst worked with Mrs. Kaplan and the school’s enrichment teacher, Carrie Wilson, to develop a Brown Bag Kahoot! web quiz for third graders, which incorporated the use of Chromebooks. Approximately 30 students participated in this fun, voluntary seminar. They are pictured here with Mrs. Kaplan, displaying flags they created as part of the activity. Brown Bag seminars are enrichment opportunities geared for students to participate in during their recess time.
