Syosset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers and members of the central administration team recently met with the Superintendent’s Student Cabinet to learn more about life at the district schools and discuss how to provide students with an even more rewarding educational experience.
The Superintendent’s Student Cabinet is comprised of student ambassadors from every school in the district who serve as the voice of their respective student bodies. This year, separate elementary, middle, and high school cabinets were established to best focus on the needs of the grade levels that each cabinet represents.
Elementary cabinet members spoke positively about programs such as Project Beyond and their experiences using Chromebooks for their schoolwork. They were also asked to fill in the blank to the statement “If I were principal, I would…” Responses included utilize certain available spaces for additional student activities or discussion groups; provide additional space for music facilities; and expand Chromebook use.
High school cabinet members discussed challenges in transitioning from middle to high school; time management and the balancing of academics and extracurricular activities; the importance of being instructed on study skills; and the possibility of receiving a more in-depth overview of courses prior to enrollment.
Middle school cabinet members provided input on their favorite courses and subject areas, delivering a wide variety of answers that include social studies, science and the arts. They also provided feedback on their favorite technology tools and applications for school, which included Kahoot, Quizlet, Chromebooks and Google Classroom as well as the challenges students face to use technology wisely.
“There are many ways to assess the quality of our programs. But sometimes the best way is to talk to the students themselves about what they see as the very best aspects of their experience here as well as their hopes for how it might improve,” said Dr. Rogers. “Their insight has resulted in meaningful action in the past and we will continue to use the information we gain to enhance educational opportunities in our schools.”
