For the third consecutive year, Syosset High School hosted the FIRST Tech Challenge regional qualifying tournament, an event that showcases student knowledge in engineering and robotics through a series of game-style challenges in which robots compete. Three of Syosset High School’s four robotics teams competed in the tournament, which brought together 24 robotics teams from Long Island and New York City. The Syosset team, Vanguard, was part of the tournament’s championship alliance.
Teams Elite, Syborg and Vanguard all competed on behalf of Syosset, with Vanguard advancing and winning alliance challenges with a partner team Oyster Bots from the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District. Syosset High School’s fourth team, Dream Team, served as the event host and organizer.
Dream Team, Syborg and Vanguard recently competed in the Long Island/New York City regional championship, where Dream Team and Vanguard advanced to the third semifinal round. Dream Team wowed the audience with their autonomously programmed robot, which earned them the Control Award. Rookie team Syosset ELITE also ended the season impressively ranked 14 of the 36 top-notch teams at the championship event.
At an earlier regional competition, Dream Team won three trophies as a member of the winning alliance. This included the Inspire Award, which is the highest honor in the FIRST tournament.
The FIRST Tech Challenge – also referred to as “Sport for the Mind” – is an organized series of robotics competitions in which schools and teams participate by designing and building robots. FIRST robots are specifically engineered to complete a set or series of tasks in a specified amount of time. Tom Morritt and Craig Mooers are the technology teachers and robotics advisers for Syosset High School’s robotics program, which consists of approximately 70 students who either attend classes or serve as active members of the Robotics Club, or both.
Syosset Robotics would like to thank the administration and staff for all of the support throughout the year, and our local community club team sponsors for helping to make this the best season so far.
