All seven of the district’s elementary schools held their moving up ceremonies, officially transitioning students, ready to enter H.B. Thompson or South Woods middle schools in the fall. Fifth-graders from A.P. Willits, Berry Hill, J. Irving Baylis, Robbins Lane, South Grove, Village and Walt Whitman kicked off the special occasion by marching into their respective ceremonies in front of family, faculty members, Board trustees and friends. Musical presentations also punctuated many moving up exercises, including at Berry Hill, where the school’s string players performed the processional, with additional offerings of “We’re All Made of Stars” and “What Time Is It?” It was a bittersweet sendoff at Berry Hill and South Grove elementary schools, as both principals will be moving on. South Grove Principal Theresa Scrocco is retiring while Berry Hill’s Joanne Mannion will become a member of the central office team. Fifth-grade representatives also had the opportunity to reflect on their previous six years at their respective schools. At A.P. Willits, William Chantemsin even gave his perspective on the future before his future principal, James Kassebaum of HBT. He, along with South Woods principal Michelle Burget, was on hand to receive the new middle schoolers at many of the promotion ceremonies. Throughout the schools, fifth-graders were honored with multiple awards, from academic awards, to recognitions for their participation in student council, NYSSMA, the Nassau All-County Artist program and the character education program PRIDE. Principals and teachers announced and presented each student with a certificate to recognize their “moving up” from elementary to middle school. Congratulations to all of the fifth-graders for taking the next step.
