As an extension of their English Language Arts nonfiction unit of study and their work on biographies, Robbins Lane third graders visited Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, to get a close-up look into a historical figure and pioneer of the game of baseball and human rights.
As a part of their biography studies, students read about the life of Jackie Robinson, the first player of color to play in Major League Baseball. Robinson's groundbreaking accomplishments transcended beyond the baseball diamond, having a profound influence on society as he endured racism from baseball fans and players and faced death threats on a regular basis before breaking baseball’s color barrier. Students had the opportunity to visit the Jackie Robinson Rotunda at the stadium’s main entrance, an area that celebrates his life and achievements.
The students also visited the Mets Hall of Fame and Museum, the team clubhouse, the dugout, the field, television production areas and the spectator suites.
