This March, Robbins Lane Elementary School participated in the PARP (Pick A Reading Partner) program. The two-week long PTA-sponsored program encourages students to read at home with family members to develop a culture of reading outside the classroom. This year’s theme at Robbins Lane was “Under the Sea.” Parents and teachers were reminded to encourage their readers to get involved in reading and participating in fun reading-related activities.
PARP kicked off with award winning author, educator and storyteller Jason Edwards who engaged the students during schoolwide assembly with a collaborative story-telling experience. The Robbins Lane Book and Author committee also sponsored a day of captivating assemblies presented author Lisa Funari-Willever. Two lucky readers per grade were chosen to have lunch with the author where they asked her questions about her work and her experience as a writer. The entire school brought home an grade-appropriate autographed book from Ms. Funari-Willever.
The class and top three students from each grade who logged the most minutes read received awards. As a school, Robbins Lane read an amazing 86,733 minutes over the two-week period! Although PARP has ended, the thirst for reading still continues in our young readers.
