Through an ongoing partnership with the International Vocal Arts Institute, Metropolitan Opera Assistant Conductor Joan Doarnemann and several opera singers visited Syosset High School to perform segments from various operas and answer questions from students enrolled in the school’s music programs. The partnership between IVAI and the Syosset School District has been in place for nearly 20 years. The first several workshops held this year took place throughout the day on Oct. 14. Students were treated to performances that demonstrated the great vocal range required to be successful in this demanding art form. Singers discussed the physical demands of preparing their voices and answered students’ questions following each performance. Students were also asked to give their interpretations and impressions about the performances they had just experienced. Additional IVAI visits are planned for later in the school year“Our district places tremendous value in our longstanding association with IVAI,” said Michael Salzman, Syosset’s coordinator of fine and performing arts, K-12. “They have brought exciting, enriching, and unique experiences to our students for many years.” IVAI works with young vocalists who are embarking on a career in opera and provides them with training, performance opportunities and career counseling Doarnemann, Salzman, opera singers and students are pictured here following a session held in the high school orchestra/chorus room.
